Over the course of two four-month semesters and an intensive four-week Summer Seminar, up to 20 students immerse themselves in fast-paced, intellectually rigorous academic coursework; engage in work-based service and meaningful labor in Sitka; and practice self-governance of key elements of the Outer Coast experience. Through small seminars, close-knit residential living, and involvement in the wider Sitka community, Outer Coast Year students will learn how to identify, analyze, and address the challenges — both big and small — that face the world today.

Summer Seminar 2021 | July 7 - August 7, 2021

Rising high school juniors and seniors, as well as all Outer Coast alumni who are still in high school, are eligible to apply for the Summer Seminar. Graduating seniors from Alaska are also eligible to apply for the Summer Seminar.

Fall Semester 2021 | August 16 - December 11, 2021
Spring Semester 2022 | January 11 - April 30, 2022

Any high school graduate or GED holder who has not yet completed a postsecondary degree is eligible for the Fall & Spring Semesters. Students may apply for either the Fall Semester, Spring Semester, or both, and preference may be given to applicants who apply for both semesters. Applicants may also opt to be considered for the Summer Seminar.

If you are an alum of the Fall Semester 2020 or Spring Semester 2021 and are reapplying for the Fall Semester 2021 or Spring Semester 2022, you do not need to complete this form. Instead, please write a letter explicating your interest in returning and email it as a .pdf attachment to frank@outercoast.org. Your letter will be shared only with the Applications Committee, not with the rest of the Outer Coast community.

Outer Coast will meet all demonstrated financial need.

Incomplete applications will not be considered.

More information about the Year and Outer Coast can be found in the Program Overview, or at outercoast.org. If you have any questions, please contact frank@outercoast.org.

Teacher Recommendation

Please ask a teacher to be your Outer Coast Year recommender. We will contact your teacher to learn more about you as a student and a person.

Your teacher will receive an email directing them to the recommendation form when you submit your application. Your teacher's recommendation is due a week after you submit your application.

Optional Recommendation

If you feel there is a figure in your life (e.g. another teacher, an employer, a mentor, a peer, etc.) who knows a different side of you than your teacher recommender, you have the option to obtain a second recommendation from them.

Their recommendation is due on the same timeline as your teacher's recommendation.
